SchoolWeb Digital Library
VANCOUVER, BC, CANADA -- Alternet Systems Inc. ( NASD
OTCBB: ASYI ) announces the first installation of a SchoolWeb
Digital Library in a Canadian college This is the result of
the commencement of the SchoolWeb Digital Library sales and
marketing program for North American educational institutions
in January. The market comprises approximately 7000 universities
and colleges and 18,000 K-12 School Districts and is estimated
to exceed $500 million in North America.
School libraries are increasingly being asked to be the custodians
of digital learning materials (DLMs). With digital tools such
as SchoolWeb Library, librarians can easily apply the same
skills they use to manage physical materials to collecting,
classifying and archiving digital materials. Recent trends
in college and university library expenditures indicate that
digital resource spending has increased from 23% of a librarys
budget in 2000 to over 62% in 2005. This trend is expected
to continue into the K-12 school library market as well.
DLMs can take a wide variety of forms, including anything
from simple documents to moving animation and video packages
of web-based content. This requires a particular type of cataloguing
system to be able to store these packages in a way that the
content can be easily accessed and searched. SchoolWeb Library
supports several standards and specifications that are used
to make DLM's portable and interoperable and accountable,
including IEEE LOM Metadata, IMS Content Packages and SCORM.
The SchoolWeb Digital Library is designed to work as part
of any open source solution or as part of a complete Virtual
Learning Environment as offered in SchoolWeb VLE 2.4. The
SchoolWeb Digital Library is the most cost-effective product
in the market today.
SchoolWeb VLE 2.4 is a strategic software system that creates
a user-friendly, Internet learning environment for teachers
and students. Combining online courseware with a digital library,
SchoolWeb VLE 2.4 provides all the tools required to create
a high-quality learning environment for students and teachers
in the digital age.
For schools that are located in rural or remote locations,
SchoolWeb Network Server Systems provide high-speed internet
service to locations that have limited access to broadband.
These systems are especially critical in countries that have
limited telecom infrastructure. Alternet is active in several
parts of the world bidding and submitting proposals for country-wide
SchoolWeb network server systems. The total market for Alternets
network server systems is estimated to exceed $1 billion worldwide.
Alternet Systems Inc. is an education technology and software
provider. The Company has three main areas of focus: SchoolWeb
application software; SchoolWeb Network Server Systems; and
Managed Broadband Wireless Networks.
